TIP #36 FROM THE EVERYDAY MOTHER

Positive behavior tip for toddlers

Instead of saying, “calm down”, try: “Tell me about why you’re upset” or “will a hug make you feel better?”.

Our behavior therapist recommended these two phrases for our son, and I kid you not when I say they’re two of the best phrases I ever use with my son. Not only is he a sensory kid, but he’s a hugger, so when he’s upset, hugging it out almost always makes him feel better. It helps him feel secure, comforted, and more in-control of his emotions.

So, who wants a hug???
